Battery Safety and Abuse Tolerance Validation

Safety of the Li-Ion battery will have the greatest impact on the market acceptance of the technology in automotive and stationary applications. In this tutorial, we will discuss safety-enhancing technology and the validation of battery safety under ordinary and abusive conditions.

Brian M. Barnett, Ph.D., Vice President, TIAX LLC

John Turner, Ph.D, Group Leader, Computational Engineering & Energy Sciences, Oak Ridge National Lab & UT-Battelle

Rich Byczek, Global Director, Business Development, Intertek Transportation Technologies

Presenter Biographies:

Dr. Brian Barnett’s multidisciplinary team develops advanced battery materials, battery technologies, and battery-safety technologies. He has played a founding role in developing polymer electrolyte battery technology, carbon anode materials, battery safety technologies, and high-energy, high-power cathode material. Prior to TIAX, Dr. Barnett was a Vice President and Member of the Board of Directors at Arthur D. Little where he directed battery activities.

Dr. John Turner is the Group Leader of the Computational Engineering & Energy Sciences Group (CEES) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). After completion of a Ph.D., in Nuclear Engineering from North Carolina State University, Dr. Turner joined Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and worked in areas including radiation transport, metal casting simulation and numerical methods. In 2008, Dr. Turner moved to ORNL to form CEES, a new group focused on developing and applying advanced simulation tools to applications such as nuclear energy and electrical energy storage. Dr. Turner also leads the Virtual Reactor Integration focus area of the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors (CASL), a DOE Innovation Hub.

Rich Byczek is a project management and validation engineering profession with 20 years of experience. Specific experience in energy storage and electric vehicle standards development, automotive electronics and audio system development and testing in both EMC and performance (environmental/durability). 3 years focus on electrical product safety. Currently active in multiple standards development committees and frequent speaker on energy storage and electric vehicle infrastructure international regulatory compliance and certifications.
